A dog without a collar is much harder to control or restrain in the case of an emergency. Even if you think that your dog is the best dog in the world, he could surprise you in the way he reacts in a stressful situation.
In addition to safety, a collar with identification could reunite you with your dog if they get lost. Sometimes there are circumstances beyond your control – extreme weather, theft, a tree branch falling on your fence and leaving a place for your dog to slip out. You never know! Or, your dog could be a secret genius and figure out how to escape in a manner that you didn’t prepare for.
Or, your dog could be a secret genius and figure out how to escape in a manner that you didn’t prepare for. Mine did! I had to invest in an escape proof kennel.
The outside world is dangerous for a pet wandering around. If your dog doesn’t have identification, they may not make it back to you if something happens. Don’t put yourself through the heartbreaking regret of wishing you would have had identification on your dog.
If for some reason you can’t use a collar or just absolutely don’t want to, it would be a good idea to microchip your dog. This is a simple procedure done in a vet’s office and will allow your dog to be identified by most animal facilities if picked up. You are able to set it up with your contact information. If the dog is found, he can be scanned and they will know how to get in touch with you.
